THOROUGHBRED SEASON OPENING NIGHT PROGRAM COMPILED,
14-HORSE FIELDS DEBUT AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY – The first racing program of the 2010 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season was drawn this morning in the track’s racing office.
A total of nine races will be conducted on Thursday, Aug. 19, featuring full fields with competition underway at 6:30pm.
Remington Park has expanded its pari-mutuel tote capabilities to allow for 14-horse fields for the first time in the track’s history. There could be three races featuring 14-horse fields on Thursday night.
Overall, 104 horses entered the nine races. However, two of the races will not accommodate 14 due to the distance proximity to the first turn of each race. Therefore a total of six horses from those two races will not compete. If the horses that drew into the body of the race’s capacity do not scratch, then those that completed for 14-horse entries will not be allowed in the event.
The races that drew 14, but will not go with that many, are the third and the seventh. The third race is a $10,000-level claiming event on the turf at one mile. The turf railing will be set out at 18-feet to start the season, therefore only 10 will be allowed to start that race. The seventh race is the other that drew 14 but only 12 will be allowed to start in the five-furlong event on the main track.
That seventh race is the richest race on the Thursday program, an Oklahoma-bred Maiden event at five furlongs worth $31,200. The purses for the nine Opening Night events total $176,000.
Steve Asmussen, leading Remington Park trainer in 2009 with a record 102 wins, returns with his usual strong stable to attempt defense of his Chuck Taliaferro Memorial Award. Asmussen has entered five horses on Thursday night, all have jockey Aaron Gryder named aboard.
This will be the first season at Remington Park for the veteran Gryder who will ride first-call for the powerful Asmussen stable.
Veteran jockey Tony McNeil returns to ride a full season at Remington Park for the first time this millennium. He has the first call for trainer Cash Asmussen, Steve’s brother. McNeil will compete in two races (first and fifth) on Thursday. Among McNeil’s riding competitors in both events will be his oldest son Bryan McNeil, a regular at Remington Park in recent years.
The $200,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup and the $150,000 Governor’s Cup, are the first stakes races of the season. Both will be contested on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Remington Park fans can win $500 in Cash by playing the races during the first three nights of the season. Drawings for the $500 in Cash will begin starting after race 3 and continue thru the end of live racing. Fans simply use their Lucky Circle Card as they wager on Remington Park live racing to be eligible.
The first race for the opening three nights of the season, Aug. 19-21, is 6:30pm. Remington Park will move to a regular Wednesday thru Saturday evening schedule starting Aug. 25.
Remington Park casino action continues each and every day, featuring 750 of the best games to play. Doors open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing.
