Fascinatin’ Rhythm Surprises In Jameela Stakes

LAUREL, MD.  8-14-10---Buckingham Farm’s Fascinating Rhythm delivered a shocker in today’s feature at Laurel Park when she rallied to win the $50,000 Jameela Stakes.

Sent to the post at odds of 17-1, the Richard Small trainee was winning for the first time in two years and for the first time on the grass with her late closing effort under jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr.

The More Than Ready mare completed the six furlong distance in 1:11.1 and paid $36. Her late rally came at the expense of another longshot, Kosmos Buddy, who finished second. The $17,124 trifecta was completed by Onearmedbandit.

“I really liked the filly when I worked her last week,” said Homeister, Jr., her face speckled with mud. “I really liked the distance. I thought this would hit her right on the head by the way she worked five-eighths of a mile. She really broke well out of the gate but she really doesn’t have any real speed leaving there. When I saw a line of horses across the track, I thought as long as they would come back I would have a chance to catch up with them. The turf is a little bit soft so I think it was in her favor. I was able to swing out wide and she got a big heart at that point and took off running.”

“After she won three or four races it was real real hard to place her. Then the horse got discouraged,” said Small. “She’s back and she’s doing very well now. We put her on the turf about a month or so ago and I thought, ‘wow’. I saw the race in the book. The turf workout, I was sort of impressed by it.”

Grove Saddles Four Winners In A Row, Franklin Rides Five

Bowie-based trainer Chris Grove shipped five horses to Laurel Park today and four of them came back winners.

Grove won races three, four, five and six with Hello Easy Street ($5.60), Firefighter ($3.80) and Joepaul’streasure ($4.40) and Pride Park ($9.80), respectively. Julian Pimental rode the Hello Easy Street and Malcolm Franklin rode the final three.

In race seven, Franklin won again, this time aboard first-time-starter Sweet Susan ($4.80) for trainer Tim Tullock. He closed out the card with his fifth winner, Checks Cashed ($17.80) for trainer Fran Campitelli.

Grove started the afternoon in second place in the trainer’s standings behind Rodney Jenkins but his four-bagger rocketed him into the lead with four days remaining in the eleven day summer stand.

“It’s great to be back at Laurel,” said Grove, referring to the resumption of live racing in Maryland after the summer break.
