FOREST BOYCE CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

LAUREL, MD. 08-06-10---Apprentice jockey Forest Boyce ended the Colonial Downs summer meeting with victories on 13 of final 17 days of that stand and the 25-year picked up where she left off when racing has shifted to Laurel Park. She won a pair of races on Friday’s twilight card and leads the rider standings with four wins during the first three days of the mini-meet.

Boyce visited the winners’ circle with Katrinarita ($12.60) in the opener and Cagey Act ($13) in the third. Her four winners have an average win payout of $14.05.

“I have been getting on good horses for some top trainers,” said Boyce.

A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, a top visual arts college in downtown Baltimore, Boyce has been around horses all her life. She began working for legendary conditioner Mikey Smithwick at the age of 11 and galloped horses for trainer Dickie Small before making her professional debut last summer.

“I have been lucky to have good people helping me out,” added Boyce.

Former rider Mario Verge, who retired six years ago with 2,118 victories and now works in the Maryland Jockey Club racing office, has become a mentor for Boyce, who has earned nearly half of her 40 wins this year since July 3.

“She has a lot of patience but the key has been her willingness to learn,” Verge said. “She is always asking what can she do to get better and now we are seeing the results of her hard work. She is a little more mature than most bug riders and because of that she is more eager to listen. I am really happy for her.”

Boyce will ride with the weight allowance until early December.
