LOVE’S REASON AN IMPRESSIVE WINNER IN DEBUT

LAUREL, MD. 08-01-10---Maryland Million day is two months away but fans may have gotten a glimpse at a horse to watch for the 25th annual card that will take place at Laurel Park on October 2 in when Love’s Reason won in her debut in today’s opener.

Trained by Rodney Jenkins, the two-year-old daughter of Not For Love broke sluggishly in the $28,000 maiden special weight race and was three-wide around the turn in the five-furlong test. But jockey Travis Dunkelberger patiently allowed his charge to run down Juanita, another first-time starter, in deep stretch to win by a half-length.

Love’s Reason stopped the clock in 59.5 seconds and paid $3 as the 1-2 betting choice.

Introduced in 1986, the Maryland Million is a program for the offspring of Maryland-based stallions. Maryland-sired thoroughbreds are nominated before they become 2-year-olds and remain eligible for life to run in the Maryland Million races. After 24 runnings, 211 stallions have been represented. Hall of Fame broadcaster Jim McKay originally proposed the concept and remained Chairman of the Board until his death two years ago.

Love’s Reason would be eligible to run in the $100,000 Lassie for two-year-old fillies at six-furlongs.

Three other potential Maryland Million horses won on Sunday’s nine-race program. Dream Louise, a three-year-old filly, took the third race on the turf. Betty’s John De, a three-year-old gelding, broke his maiden in the fifth. Laurel loving Breezy Boy, a three-year-old colt, took the sixth in dominating fashion.
