JOCKEY CALVIN BOREL AND GRADED STAKES WINNERS TRAVELING TO REMINGTON PARK FOR SATURDAY RACING
OKLAHOMA CITY – The first stakes races of the 2010 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season will boast quality fields on Saturday, Aug. 21. Those fields have risen in stature even more as a pair of recent graded stakes winners and a multiple Kentucky Derby winning jockey will arrive in Oklahoma City this weekend to compete.
The $200,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup will now include Atta Boy Roy, winner of the Grade 2, $250,000 Churchill Downs Handicap in May. Trained by Valorie Lund, Atta Boy Roy worked a solid half-mile at Churchill Downs on Saturday and is expected to travel late Tuesday to Remington Park from his Louisville, Ky. base. Atta Boy Roy has won nine of 20 starts and has compiled $359,363 in earnings to date.
Calvin Borel, winning jockey on three of the last four Kentucky Derby winners, is expected to travel from Saratoga in upstate New York to ride Atta Boy Roy here Saturday night. Borel is the regular rider for 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. He has guided Street Sense (2007), Mine That Bird (2009) and Super Saver (2010) to victory in America's most famous race, the Kentucky Derby, over the last four years.
The $150,000 Governor’s Cup has also picked up a recent graded stakes winner for Saturday in Shadowbdancing. The 5-year-old horse won the Grade 2, $300,000 Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows in Iowa in late June. Trained by Terrel Gore, Shadowbdancing has won 10 of 25 career starts and boasts earnings of $623,745.
Both the Sprint Cup (6 furlongs) and the Governor’s Cup (1-1/16 miles) will be contested on the Remington Park main track. The fields for the first stakes races of the season will be drawn on Wednesday in the Remington Park racing office.
Greeley’s Conquest is expected to defend his title in the Sprint Cup after winning the race formerly known as the Sprint Championship last year. Owned by the Millard Seldin Revocable Trust of Louisville, Ky. and trained by Gary Thomas, Greeley’s Conquest posted a bullet half-mile workout on Monday morning of 46.83 seconds over a fast track at Remington Park. The drill was the fastest of 42 at the distance this morning.
The Sprint Cup will be the first start of 2010 for the 6-year-old horse, a veteran of many graded sprint stakes across the country. He has earned $448,763 during his career which includes seven victories.
Another that could go in the six-furlong Sprint Cup is millionaire Jonesboro. Owned by Michael Langford of Jonesboro, Ark. and trained by Randy Morse, Jonesboro has shown great versatility in his career that includes three wins and three seconds from eight Remington Park attempts. The 8-year-old horse has won 14 of his 48 lifetime starts and boasts earnings of $1,536,685.
Jonesboro’s versatility in adapting to sprint races and other events going around two turns has allowed his connections to also nominate him to the Governor’s Cup on Aug. 21. He had the lead in the stretch of the 1-1/16 miles race last year before giving way to Going Ballistic by 1-1/4 lengths.
The 2009 Governor’s Cup gave Going Ballistic the earnings needed to push him over the $1 million mark for his career and join Jonesboro in Remington Park’s Millionaire Club for horses that have competed here and surpassed the seven-digit money plateau overall.
Owned by Kindred Thoroughbreds of Dallas and trained by Donnie Von Hemel, Going Ballistic is expected to make his return to Remington Park, attempting to keep his record here perfect. The 6-year-old gray has started just three times in Oklahoma City, winning each attempt: the 2006 Springboard Mile, the 2007 Oklahoma Derby and the Governor’s Cup last year. The Florida-bred Going Ballistic has now earned $1,147,412 overall.
Others that may enter the Governor’s Cup on Wednesday include Kick On, winner of the 2008 Springboard Mile. The 4-year-old has been working in past weeks at Remington Park to ready for his first race here since scoring in the Springboard. Red Lead, third in last year’s Oklahoma Derby, could also go. The 4-year-old gelding by 2000 Preakness Stakes winner Red Bullet has won six races from 17 career attempts, finishing second four times and third in three others.
The first race for the opening three nights of the season, Aug. 19-21, is 6:30pm. Remington Park will move to a regular Wednesday thru Saturday evening schedule starting Aug. 25.
