HALL OF FAME RIDER ANGEL CORDERO TO PARTICIPATE IN LIVE WEB CHAT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero, an eight-time leading rider on The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) circuit who was known as “the King of Saratoga,” will participate in a live chat on Thursday, August 5 at 8 p.m. EDT. The homepage for the NYRA live chats is http://www.nyra.com/livechat/index.shtml.

Cordero, a native of Santurce, Puerto Rico, began riding in New York in the early 1960s and took his first NYRA title in 1967. He remained atop the standings through 1969, and finished in the top three riders from 1970 until he won his fourth title in 1975. Cordero was a 14-time leading rider at Saratoga Race Course who won 11 consecutive meet titles from 1976-1986. Among the rider’s notable mounts were Bold Forbes, Seattle Slew, Slew o’ Gold, Groovy, Spend A Buck and Chief’s Crown, who gave Cordero his only Travers victory.

Forced to retire due to injuries sustained in 1992, he finished his career with 7,057 winners from 38,646 mounts, including three Kentucky Derbys, two Preaknesses, one Belmont Stakes, and one Travers. Now 68, Cordero serves as an agent for jockey John Velazquez and gallops horses for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Fans who wish to participate in the live dialogue with Cordero may log on to http://www.nyra.com/livechat beginning this Thursday at 8 p.m. No pre-registration is necessary and users may simply type questions and comments in the chat field at the bottom of the page for Cordero to address. At the conclusion of the chat, an “instant replay” is created for future reference.
