PADDY O’PRADO’S PROMISING POTENTIAL FOR
Less than one week after Arlington’s International Festival of Racing, 2010 Grade I Secretariat Stakes winner Paddy O’Prado, owned by Donegal Racing, is listed alongside last Saturday’s Grade I Arlington Million hero Debussy, owned by Princess Haya of Jordan, in the Thoroughbred Times’ 2010 Road to the Breeders’ Cup Turf to be run at Churchill Nov. 6.
That’s because by the time the Breeders’ Cup Turf rolls around 11 weeks from now, sophomores will have had at least a month to sort themselves out against their older siblings in the nation’s traditional weight-for-age races.
Also, Paddy O’ Prado is trained by Dale Romans, who served as the conditioner for Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Kitten’s Joy when that horse won the Secretariat in 2004. Kitten’s Joy went on to win the Grade I Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational later that October against older horses before finishing second in Lone Star’s 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf while still a sophomore.
The following year Kitten’s Joy came back to be the odds-on choice in the 2005 Arlington Million, had a clear lead at the furlong grounds but then succumbed to the late run of Mrs. John Magnier’s Powerscourt.
However, the history of Secretariat winners and runners-up in later Arlington Millions was well documented in earlier International Festivals.
Masayuki Nishiyama’s Paradise Creek finished second in the 1992 Secretariat and won the Million in 1994. Ryehill Farm’s Awad won the Secretariat in 1993 and the Million in 1995.
The late James Lewis Jr’s Mecke was second in the Secretariat in 1995 and won the 1996 Arlington Million, and Michael Tabor’s Marlin won the 1996 Secretariat and came back to win the 1997 Arlington Million.
Finally, in the renewals a year before Kitten’s Joy continued the Secretariat-Million-link, Brushwood Stable’s Kicken Kris won the 2003 Secretariat and became the adjudged Arlington Million winner the following summer.

Once again, after accomplishing his Sunday mission, General Charley posed in the winner’s circle next to a fan club that rivaled Donegal Racing’s ownership group that appeared in the winner’s circle following Paddy O’ Prado Secretariat Stakes score last weekend.
“Yes, we are hoping to get one more race for General Charley before the end of the meeting (Sept. 26),” trainer Chris Block said Wednesday morning. “We like to run him about once a month so we’re hoping that will work out for us. Of course, we’d also love to get another win for all the horse’s fans that come out to watch him. That kind of loyalty is great for horse racing.”

JOCKEY INEZ KARLSSON TAKES TWO – SUNDAY’S DAILY DOUBLE
Jockey Inez Karlsson started off her International Festival of Racing weekend by winning Friday’s fifth race astride Margaret Burlingham’s Saint Leon to lead the “Young Guns” to victory over the “Cagey Veterans” in Friday’s event featuring famous retired riders.
