FOUR EUROPEANS CANTER TUESDAY AFTER CLEARING QUARANTINE

Arlington Million candidate Summit Surge, Beverly D. runners Pachattack and Biased, and Secretariat Stakes starter Wigmore Hall all cleared quarantine Tuesday morning following their transatlantic journey Saturday and visited the Arlington track for the first time during training hours.

William Bellew’s Summit Surge, an Irish-bred who won the Group II Sky Bet York Stakes at Great Britain’s York racecourse July 24, appeared on the main track at 7:15 a.m., backed up to the three-quarter pole, then turned and cantered around to the mile pole with exercise rider Marcel Koran in the irons.  After completing his canter, the Luca Cumani trainee was schooled in the paddock.

Prospective Beverly D. runners Pachattack, owned by Michael Deegan, and Biased, owned by Marquesa de Moratalla, both cantered around the Polytrack.  Pachattack, a winner of her last two in listed stakes races in Great Britain, had Andrew Morris in the irons.  British-bred Biased, third in a listed stakes in France in her last start but a winner in minor French stakes company before that, was handled by Neil Chemarin.

Also being introduced to Arlington’s Polytrack was Mark Hawtin’s Wigmore Hall, an Irish-bred sophomore trained by Michael Bell.  That son of High Chaparral backed up to the seven-eighths pole before turning and cantering one mile with exercise rider Gillian Dolman astride.

Wigmore Hall won the Newmarket Nights Conditions Stakes at Newmarket Aug. 6 with jockey Jamie Spencer in the irons.  Spencer will come to America to ride Wigmore Hall in the Secretariat Stakes as the final leg of Arlington’s Mid-America Triple.

The Arlington Million, $750,000 Beverly D. Stakes and $400,000 Secretariat Stakes are the only three Grade I races offered in Illinois on an annual basis, and will make up Arlington’s one-day International Festival of Racing celebrated once again this Saturday.

SECRETARIAT’S CHEROKEE LORD, HATOOF PROSPECTS WORK MONDAY

Millard Seldin Revocable Trust and the Estate of Hoss Inman’s Cherokee Lord, a candidate for Saturday’s Grade I Secretariat Stakes at a mile and a quarter over Arlington’s world famous turf course and also the final leg of Arlington’s Mid-America Triple, worked five furlongs over the grass Monday in 1:06.80 with the “dogs” well out from the rail.

With jockey Julio Felix in the irons, the Charlie Livesay trainee accomplished the last furlong in 12 flat.

One added stakes event on Arlington Million Day Saturday is the $60,000 Hatoof Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the grass, and breezing three furlongs Monday over the grass for that test with the “dogs” up was Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership’s Elusive Champagne, who was timed in 38.40 while getting the last eighth in 12.60 under jockey Michael Baze.

Also tuning up for Saturday’s Hatoof on Monday morning over the local lawn with the “dogs” up was Edward Seltzer’s Besitos, who got four furlongs in 51.60.

FREE FIGHTER GETS SUNDAY BREEZE FOR SATURDAY’S STARS AND STRIPES

Included for the first time as part of Arlington’s International Festival of Racing program this Saturday is the 79th running of the Grade III Stars and Stripes Handicap at a mile and five-eighths over the local lawn.

Thomas Fedro Sr. and Team Block’s Free Fighter, defending champion from last summer’s Stars and Stripes, breezed five furlongs over a firm turf Sunday in 1:06.80 in advance of Saturday’s renewal, while the “dogs” were well out from the rail.

“It was just a maintenance move for him,” said trainer Chris Block of Free Fighter, who won Churchill’s Grade III Louisville Handicap at a mile and a half over yielding ground May 22.

EUROPEANS DEBUSSY, TAZEEZ TO HIT TRAINING TRACK WEDNESDAY

Shadwell Stable’s Tazeez and Darley Stud Management’s Debussy, two of the three European invaders for Saturday’s 28th running of the Grade I Arlington Million, are expected to clear quarantine Tuesday afternoon and are slated to stretch their legs over Arlington’s training track Wednesday morning.

Both horses are trained by John Gosden.

Tazeez finished third in Great Britain’s Group I Prince of Wales’s Stakes on June 16 during the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting.

Debussy finished seventh in that same stakes beaten 4 1/2-lengths but rebounded to finish fourth in Great Britain’s Group II Sky Bet York Stakes July 24 although the rider lost his whip in the stretch.
