Dominic Galluscio, winning trainer of Stormy’s Majesty (No. 2): “The stretch run seemed to take forever. I was surprised Stormy was that close; I expected Johannesburg Smile to be on the lead. He ran very game. I might have tried Stormy too prematurely against open company [8th in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy]; we’ll see how he comes out of this before we decide on his next start.”
Edgar Prado, winning jockey aboard Stormy’s Majesty (No. 2): “Last time out he broke and was right there on a faster pace, and he didn’t like that much. Today he went a bit more freely. It was definitely a concern to me with an uncoupled entry chasing [No. 5, Johannesburg Smile]. I was hoping he didn’t burn me early but [Stormy’s Majesty] was doing everything very relaxed. He was happy where he was. My chance came when [Ibboyee went outside] and my horse was able to come down.”
Todd Pletcher, trainer of runner-up and beaten favorite, Ibboyee (No. 1): “We thought we’d be stalking the main pace, and that’s where we ended up. We got a good trip, but that was a lot of weight to carry. We had 124 pounds and to give the winner five pounds and get beat by a head; it’s tough. He was coming. He’s all heart and tried hard, but we just came up a head short.”
John Velazquez, aboard runner-up Ibboyee (No. 1): “I rode hard and didn’t get there, that’s the bad part. I had no choice but start asking him early because we were trapped on the inside the whole way. So at the top of the stretch I started hitting him left handed and he was running but he started drifting out at the same time. So I didn’t want to take the chance of slowing him down and trying to correct him, so I just kept him going forward.”
