BLACKHAWK HALL OF FAMERS ESPOSITO, SAVARD ON HAND THURSDAY

Chicago Blackhawk Hall of Fame hockey players Tony Esposito and Denis Savard will be on hand signing autographs Thursday at Arlington Park when Chicago’s premier Thoroughbred oval presents its second annual “Blackhawk Legends Day” – but the first since the Blackhawks became 2010 Stanley Cup champions last month.

In addition to those two Hall of Fame alumni, several players from the defending Stanley Cup champions are expected to be on hand based on availability.

Esposito, the Hall of Fame goaltender who played for the Black Hawks (as they were then known) from 1969-1984, will sign autographs from Noon until 2 p.m. in the West Paddock area.  Fans are encouraged to arrive as soon as the gates open at 11:15 a.m. to secure a place in line in line to ensure they get an autograph.

Esposito’s autograph session will end promptly at 2 p.m. and guests waiting in line will not be guaranteed autographs.

Savard, the Hall of Fame center who played for the Hawks from 1980-1990 and again from 1995-1997, will sign autographs from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the East Paddock area.  Fans are encouraged to arrive as soon as the gates open at 11:15 a.m. to secure a place in line to ensure they get an autograph.

Savard’s autograph session will end promptly at 3 p.m. and guests waiting in line will not be guaranteed autographs.

It should be noted that only the following items will be permitted into Arlington Park to be autographed:  flats, wearables (t-shirts, jerseys and hats) as well as pucks.  For the safety of fans as well participants in the races, hockey sticks and equipment of any kind are not permitted inside Arlington Park.

In addition, Tommy Hawk and the Blackhawks Street Team will be on hand to play various games and pass out prizes.  A Blackhawks merchandise truck will also be available under the awning paddock-side grandstand entrance for guests to purchase items.

Appearances by current team members and coaches are subject to availability.  The team’s annual Fan Convention begins the following day.

This past season, Arlington Park was a presenting sponsor for the third period at all home games at the United Center during the regular season, their playoff run and the Stanley Cup Finals, which saw the Blackhawks take home the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1961.

JOCKEYS INEZ KARLSSON, EDDIE PEREZ SCORE HAT TRICKS SATURDAY

Two prolegomenous incidents in advance of Thursday’s hockey-themed afternoon at Arlington occurred during Saturday’s racing day when jockeys Inez Karlsson and Eddie Perez both scored “hat tricks” on the nine-race card.

For Karlsson, born in Gõteborg, Sweden, 28 years ago, Thursday’s three-win afternoon began in the opener when she guided Eagle Valley Farm’s Iroquois Miss to victory for conditioner Frank Kirby, continued in the third when she won astride Captain Jack Racing Stable’s Pirates Vow for trainer Tony Granitz, and concluded aboard Virginia Tarra’s Apple Martini for trainer Chris Block.

Perez, born in Taluca, Mexico, 44 years ago, began his troika in the second half of the Daily Double on Jose Luis Gonzalez’ Landing Chaser for trainer Rafael I. Flores, continued with a popular victory (parimutuelly as well as number of people in the winner’s circle) by Red Rabbit Racing’s General Charley for trainer Block, and was completed by Paul Lewellyn and Norman Houston III’s Hot Vision in the sixth race for conditioner Lewellyn.

It was Karlsson’s second riding triple of the season, but the first for Perez during the 2010 session.  Perez and Karlsson are currently fifth and sixth respectively in the standings – two wins apart.

The only other time two jockeys had riding triples on the same racing day this season came on the Fourth of July when Julien Leparoux and Quincy Hamilton each accomplished the feat.

FIRST DEAD-HEAT AT ARLINGTON PARK RECORDED JULY 25, 1936

There have been six dead-heats for win recorded so far this season at Arlington, but history buffs might note that the first dead-heat for win recorded at the local oval came on this date in 1936, when C. B. Mears’ Crulia and Mrs. A. M. Creech’s Brightland finished on even terms in the 5 1/2-furlong first race of the day.
