Thursday, July 8, 2010 (East Boston, MA) - In anticipation of its official 75th anniversary on Saturday, July 10, Suffolk Downs today will kick off its celebration with Hall of Fame jockeys Chris McCarron and Angel Cordero sharing their memories of competing at the historic Thoroughbred racetrack.  McCarron, a Dorchester native who began his racing career working on the backstretch at Suffolk Downs, will discuss his famous victory aboard hometown favorite Waquoit in the 1987 Massachusetts Handicap in which he defeated Cordero and Broad Brush.  Track announcer Jim Hannon, who immortalized the thrilling finish of the race with his memorable call, will join the legendary jockeys as they recall their famous duel.  Photos and memorabilia from throughout the track’s history, including an original barbershop chair, a row of authentic 1935 Grandstand seats and a large exterior clock, will be on display on the first floor of the Clubhouse.

WHAT:   Suffolk Downs’ 75th Anniversary Celebration Media Day.  Personalities from the track’s historic past, including Revere resident Buddy Marino who was present at the track’s Opening Day in 1935, will share their memories.  The track will officially celebrate its anniversary on Saturday, July 10, with appearances by Hall of Fame jockeys Chris McCarron and Jerry Bailey and local favorites Abby Fuller and Carl Gambardella, throwback promotions, a tee shirt giveaway and two $75,000 stakes races.
