PARTY AT THE PARK, FATHER’S DAY MARK BIG WEEKEND AT BELMONT

ELMONT, N.Y. – A weekend filled with the best in live racing, food, drinks and music kicks off Friday at Belmont Park with the highly anticipated return of “Party at the Park” and wraps up Sunday with a special celebration for Father’s Day featuring activities for Dad and the whole family.

On Friday, the biggest party on Long Island is back at Belmont Park with a special post time of 3 p.m.

Food and drink specials are offered and at the conclusion of live racing, the night comes alive in the Festival Tent in Belmont Park’s bucolic backyard with the fabulous sounds of “Big Shot,” the popular tribute band featuring the songs of Long Island’s own Billy Joel.

Comprised of professional, national touring musicians, Big Shot is committed to the accurate reproduction of the “Piano Man’s” repertoire, and is versatile enough to also cover Elton John, The Beatles, Journey, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and many others!

From 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., former New York Daily News handicapper, musician, and belmontstakes.com blogger Ernie Munick will perform on the guitar and conduct fan-interactive trivia quizzes, also in the Tent.

For “Party at the Park,” free shuttle bus service to Belmont Park will depart the Queens Village LIRR station at 2:30 p.m., with return service scheduled for 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 8:50 p.m.

On Sunday, the Festival Tent is the site of an exciting Father’s Day Celebration, featuring premium wine and spirits tasting, deeply discounted hand-rolled cigars, and hot lather shaves beginning at noon and continuing through 4 p.m.

While Dad is being pampered, the kids can enjoy Family Fun Day, with a special starting time of 10 a.m. featuring pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, inflatables as well as tee ball, a talent show and a balloon giveaway. Activities and attractions continue through 4 p.m. and are free to children 12 years old and younger, with a $1 donation requested for pony rides to benefit the Racetrack Chaplaincy.

From noon until 4 p.m. Sunday, the backyard stage will rock to the sounds of Jeff Lubin’s “Downtown” band, playing classic and contemporary favorites.

On Father’s Day, parking gates will open at 9:15 a.m., with admission beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Families that want an extra special Father’s Day experience at the track can listen to 1050 ESPN Radio’s weekday afternoon show all week long for a chance to win one of 12 family four packs to Belmont’s Top of the Stretch picnic area. This trackside location offers a fully catered outdoor experience. The weekday afternoon show, hosted by Jody McDonald and Brandon Tierney, airs from 1 – 3 p.m. and can also be listened to online at http://espn.go.com/new-york/radio/index.

On track Saturday is the 67th running of the Grade 2 New York Breeders’ Cup for fillies and mares going 1¼ miles on the turf, while Sunday features a pair of exciting races for New York-breds including the Bouwerie for 3-year-old fillies and the Mike Lee for 3-year-olds, both at seven furlongs.

The Belmont Park spring/summer meet continues through Sunday, July 18, with live racing Wednesday through Sunday as well as on Monday, July 5. With the exception of “Party at the Park,” first race post time is 1 p.m.
