BELMONT PARK NOTES

  • Super Saver back to work, Life At Ten in good shape following Phipps win
  • Drosselmeyer back to track after Belmont win
  • Field shaping up for next Saturday's Grade 2 New York

ELMONT, N.Y. – Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, who returned to the work tab Saturday morning, came out of the four-furlong move in good order, reported Jonathan Thomas, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher.

Eighth in the Preakness in his most recent start, the WinStar Farms colt covered a half-mile in 49.21.

"Super Saver worked very well and came out of it great," said Thomas. "We wanted to give him the opportunity to stretch his legs and get back in normal preparations."

With the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga Race Course on August 28 a primary goal, Super Saver will breeze again next Saturday, said Thomas.

Among the Pletcher-trained horses who breezed Sunday were Aikenite, who went four furlongs in 48.07 over the training track; Munnings, who went a half-mile in 49.63 on the main track, and the Mother Goose-bound Devil May Care, who covered five furlongs in 1:01.05.

Thomas added that Life At Ten emerged from her front-running score in Saturday's Grade 1 Ogden Phipps in fine form.

"Nothing has been discussed regarding her next start," he said.

Though he enjoyed a day off on Sunday, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott reported that WinStar Farms' Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer has come out of the race in good order.

"He's been back to the track, he galloped yesterday," Mott said Sunday. "He has the day off today and he'll have some easy days between now and shipping up to Saratoga."

The field for next Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 New York is beginning to take shape, with eight fillies and mares probable for the 67th running of the 1¼-mile turf race.

Gozzip Girl will make her first start as a 4-year-old in the New York, following an impressive sophomore campaign in which she won the Grade 1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park, the Grade 2 Sands Point at Belmont, and the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride at Gulfstream Park.

Ave, owned by Three Chimneys Racing is one of two probable entrants for trainer Roger Attfield, who could also send Charles Fipke's Lady Shakespeare. Ave exits a third place finish in her first start in the United States, the Grade 3 Gallorette Handicap on the Preakness Day undercard May 15, while Lady Shakespeare won the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland on April 22 in her most recent outing.

Second to Lady Shakespeare in the Bewitch was Swettenham Stud's Changing Skies, one of three Bill Mott trainees who could start on Saturday. Kiawah Cat, third in a Keeneland allowance race on April 18 and Treat Gently, winner of the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay at Belmont on May 22, were also named probable starters.

Nehantic Kat, second in the Sheepshead Bay, and Daveron, a turf allowance winner on May 14 at Belmont are also probable according to NYRA Stakes Coordinator Andrew Byrnes.
