  • Super Saver, Quality Road to breeze Sunday; Pletcher points Ailalea, Devil May Care and Katy Now to Mother Goose
  • Franny Freud heading to Prioress; Wall Street Wonder eyeing Vanderbilt
  • Evan Shipman next for Giant Moon
  • Bush considering Fourstardave for Get Stormy; Banrock training well

ELMONT, N.Y. – Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver is scheduled to return to the Belmont Park work tab Sunday, along with Met Mile hero Quality Road, trainer Todd Pletcher said this morning.

Both will go a half-mile, said the trainer.

It will be the second move for Super Saver since he finished eighth in the Preakness on May 15 after having given Pletcher his first Derby victory. The Maria’s Mon colt, owned by WinStar Farm, had his first serious work on June 12, going a half-mile in 49.21, and is being readied for a summer campaign that will have as its next major New York objective the Grade 1, $1 million Travers at Saratoga Race Course.

Edward P. Evans’ Quality Road, who is being pointed to the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga on August 7, notched his third straight victory of 2010 in the Met Mile on Memorial Day, having won the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope and the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park over the winter.

Quality Road and Super Saver are doing very well,” said Pletcher.

The trainer has penciled in the Grade 1 Mother Goose on June 26 for three of his four nominees to the 1 1/16th mile race – Starlight Partners’ Ailalea, winner of the Grade 3 Dogwood in her most recent start; Glencrest Farm’s Devil May Care, who was 10th in the Kentucky Derby, and Mill House’s Katy Now, who will carry a three-race win streak into her stakes debut.

John Velazquez will ride Devil May Care, who won Belmont’s Grade 1 Frizette last fall, while Hall of Famer Edgar Prado has the mount aboard Ailalea, said Pletcher.

Trainer John Terranova reported that Franny Freud, winner of three straight, continues to do “wonderfully” as she prepares for her next engagement, the Grade 1 Prioress at Belmont on July 4.

“She worked really well Tuesday morning [a bullet 59.06] and she’s doing great,” said Terranova of the New York-bred daughter of Freud, who is owned by Paul Pompa, Jr.

First or second in all but one of her 10 starts, Franny Freud most recently defeated colts in the New York Stallion Stakes on May 26 going seven furlongs on the turf.

Terranova also said that Wall Street Wonder, who won the Paumonok and Grade 3 Toboggan to kick off his 2010 campaign, is coming along nicely. In his most recent start, the 4-year-old colt finished 12th in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes on Derby Day.

“That’s a race I put a line through, he didn’t like the mud at Churchill Downs,” said Terranova, who trains the son of City Place for Stetson Stables. “He had a bit of a respiratory infection before the True North, but now, we’re getting him back in the groove.”

The next major objective for Wall Street Wonder will be the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga on August 8, said the trainer.

Albert Fried Jr.’s Giant Moon is progressing nicely in the second comeback effort of his career, trainer Rick Schosberg said Friday, and will point for the Evan Shipman, a $75,000 race for New York-breds going 1 1/8th miles at Saratoga Race Course on July 26.

After winning his first four starts, including the 2008 Count Fleet at Aqueduct, Giant Moon stepped onto the Triple Crown trail. Following a ninth-place finish in the Grade 3 Gotham and a fourth in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, the son of Giant’s Causeway bypassed the Derby to run in the Preakness, in which he finished eighth.

Sidelined by foot problems for the rest of his 3-year-old season, Giant Moon returned for four starts in 2009, winning the Grade 3 Excelsior, as well as an overnight stakes for New York-breds, and finishing second in another New York-bred stakes. He finished seventh in the Kingston Stakes last May at Belmont Park, his first try on turf, before again experiencing foot troubles.

Giant Moon returned to the races in a tough edition of the Grade 3 Westchester on Belmont Park Opening Day April 30, finishing eighth, but has since captured a 1 1/16th

mile allowance optional claimer for statebreds on May 16, and finished second in a one-mile race under the same conditions.

“He’s doing great,” Schosberg said.  “I’m very pleased with him.  The Evan Shipman is probably next – he’ll get his two turns, a mile and an eighth, we think that’s what he wants.”

Get Stormy, a rapidly-rising turf star in the Tom Bush barn is expected to ship to Woodbine for a run in the Grade 2 King Edward, but if all goes according to plan will then look ahead to the Grade 2 Fourstardave at Saratoga Race course on August 1, Bush said Friday.

Get Stormy carries a five-race win streak dating back to July 29, 2009, when he won an allowance at Saratoga, one of two upstate turf victories last summer.

No firm plans have been made for veteran New York-bred grass runner Banrock, who was most recently fifth in the Kingston Stakes at Belmont on May 30, but the 7-year-old gelding is preparing for his next start, which could come in allowance company at Belmont.

“He came out of the Kingston in great shape,” Bush said.  “He was just too close to the pace that day, but he’s carrying good weight and doing really well.”
