FRANNY FREUD FACES MALES IN
ELMONT, N.Y. – Franny Freud, who has already won on conventional dirt and synthetic surfaces, will try to add a victory on the turf to her resume when she faces males at Belmont Park on Wednesday in the $100,000 New York Stallion Stakes for 3-year-olds.
Trained by John Terranova, Franny Freud won her lone previous start against males when she broke her maiden by seven lengths on debut at
“There are a couple of races [restricted to fillies] out of town, but this race sets us up well for a spot like the Prioress [Grade 1, July 4],” said Terranova.
The speedy sophomore prepped for this seven-furlong test over the lawn with a breeze over
“It looks like she has no problem with [the turf],” said Terranova of the workout.
Franny Freud will be making a relatively short turnaround between starts, but Terranova said the daughter of Freud remains in top form.
“She had a little bit of a break between November and January, and then had some rest before her start in April,” said Terranova. “She’s run pretty fast in her last two starts, but they’ve been pretty easy for her.”
With regular rider Garrett Gomez aboard, Franny Freud, the 3-5 morning-line favorite, will break from post position 8.
The other stakes winner in the field is Make Note, who won the Bertram S. Bongard and
“We definitely think he should improve off that race,” said Kristina Dupps, assistant to George Weaver.
Edgar Prado retains the mount aboard Make Note, who drew post position 3 and was tabbed as the 7-2 second choice.
Seattle Mission will make first start since a debut win at
In preparation for his comeback, the son of Strategic Mission breezed four furlongs from the gate in :49.12 at
“It’s been so long since he ran,” Robin Smullen, assistant to trainer Barclay Tagg, said of the decision to give Seattle Mission a gate drill. “Seven furlongs is pretty quick, so we don’t want him to be flat-footed.”
Cornelio Velasquez will be reunited Seattle Mission, who will break from the rail and was assigned morning-line odds of 10-1.
Other horses entering the Spectacular Bid off maiden victories are In Te Domine, Leatherhead, and Belongs to Sheila. Meanwhile, Eire’s Run enters this spot off a fifth in a New York-bred allowance, while Game Token and Hittin the Note will try to improve off their respective third and fourth place finishes in the
The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) originally planned to offer two divisions of the NYSS – one for fillies and one for open company – on Sunday, May 23, but decided to combine the two events after neither division received sufficient entries.
