Northpoint Costas Shows the Way In Deputed Testamony Starter
BALTIMORE, 05-15-10 – Trainer Dale Capuano saddled two runners for Saturday’s $25,000 Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap at Pimlico Race Course. They finished one-two with Rob Ry Farm & Jane Marie Slysz’s Northpoint Costas edging Midnight Communion by two lengths
Northpoint Costas broke alertly and took the lead in the 1-1/16th mile test for runners who have started for a claiming price of $7,500 or less in 2009-2010. He kept that position the rest of the way, stopping the timer at 1:46.44. Midnight Communion, overlooked in the betting at 14-1, stalked his stablemate in fourth and then slipped through on the rail at the top of the lane to gain the place. Money for Love finished third.
Javier Castellano, who won Friday’s Pimlico Jockey Challenge, was aboard Northpoint Costas, who paid $4.80 to win.
Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap Quotes
Dale Capuano (winning trainer, Northpoint Costas): “He popped a quarter crack similar to Big Brown and Quality Road and missed a week of training. I was a little concerned about his fitness because I gave him a couple extra days off to rest. Javier did a good job; he kept him in hand. I expect him to improve in next race. It was a good day --
my other horse ran second.
Javier Castellano (winning jockey, Northpoint Costas): “I was worried about the distance a little bit. It was the first time around two turns with this horse. My whole key was setting a good pace. He was running very, very well and I think we found out he can go two turns. The first quarter was a little too fast, so I tried to make the second quarter be 48-and change – that was the whole key.”
