ELMONT, N.Y. – Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey is keeping his options open for the Phipps Stable's Protesting, who rallied from eighth Thursday afternoon to win an optional claimer by a neck in her first start on the turf .

It was the first victory of the year for the 3-year-old daughter of A.P. Indy, who had finished fourth to Evening Jewel in the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland in her previous start.

"I don't have anything picked out for her yet," said McGaughey. "We'll probably nominate her to the [Grade 1 BetFair TVG] Acorn on Belmont Stakes Day, and maybe the Mother Goose [Grade 1, June 26] and see how the races come up."

Protesting, out of the Storm Cat mare On Parade, broke her maiden at fourth asking at Keeneland last October and then finished second to Tizahit in the Grade 2 Demoiselle at Aqueduct Racetrack on November 28 to close out her juvenile campaign.

Uptowncharlybrown is scheduled to tune up for the 142nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes on the main track Saturday morning, said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. Last week, in his first work for McLaughin, the son of Limehouse breezed a half mile in 48.90.

"He'll go out at 8:40, after the break," said McLaughlin. "But depending on how the track is, we may push it back a day."

Owned by Fantasy Lane Stable, Uptowncharlybrown is one of a number of horses not entered in the Preakness who are under consideration for the 1 ½ mile Belmont, including Lone Star Derby winner Game On Dude, Dwyer winner Fly Down and runner-up Drosselmeyer, Devil May Care, Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box, Make Music For Me, New Madrid, Setsuko, Stately Victor, and Stay Put.

Eric Brophy's consistent New York-bred Slevin worked a half-mile in 48.93 Friday morning at Belmont Park in anticipation of the first start of his 2010 campaign, which is yet to be determined.  It was the gelding's second work off a winter layoff; on May 5 he covered five furlongs in 1:01.92.

Slevin was last seen finishing sixth in the 2009 Empire Classic behind Haynesfield.  The son of Belong to Me entered that race off an allowance win and a trio of second-place finishes in New York-bred stakes company. Overall last year, Slevin was 3-3-2 from 11 starts.  From 13 lifetime starts, he has finished outside of the trifecta just four times, always running sixth.

"He spent the winter with Bill Recio at Classic Mile Park in Ocala, a great place," said trainer Carl Domino.  "I'm looking for a nice spot to bring him back in.  He looks good, he feels good, and he's eating well."

In addition to all of the great racing here in New York, patrons at Belmont Park tomorrow will be able to watch and wager on the 135th running of the Grade 1 Preakness from Pimlico.

Belmont will offer wagering on the full Preakness card, which is scheduled to get underway at 10:45 a.m. and will feature the second leg of the Triple Crown and six other stakes races.

To accommodate horseplayers who wish to partake in the early action at "Old Hilltop," Belmont Park will open at 10:15 a.m. tomorrow. Live racing at Belmont will commence at 1 p.m., highlighted by Seattle Smooth's return to the races as she seeks a repeat victory in the Grade 2 Shuvee, and the regular $300,000 Guaranteed Late Pick 4.

Seven fillies and mares are expected for next Saturday's 52nd running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Sheepshead Bay, going 1 3/8 miles on the turf.

According to NYRA stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes, Beauty O' Gwaun, Bubbly Jane, Liberally, Nehantic Kat, Pari, RCuandry and Tarrip are probable for the race, while Sweet and Flawless is questionable.
