DOMINGUEZ, ASMUSSEN, GOLDEN TOPS AT AQUEDUCT SPRING MEET

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Ramon Dominguez won his eighth straight riding title on The  New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) circuit and Steve Asmussen emerged atop the trainer standings for his first meet title Sunday at the conclusion of the 19-day Spring Meet at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Dominguez finished the meet with 27 winners, eight more than runner-up David Cohen.

Asmussen, the 2009 Eclipse Award winning trainer whose New York string is supervised by assistant Toby Sheets, sent out a pair of winners Saturday and one Sunday to edge Gary Contessa, 12-10. A fast-closing third in the trainer standings was former jockey Rudy Rodriguez, who sent out eight winners from 11 starters over the main track, which opened on March 31.

Bruce Golden was the meet’s leading owner with four winners from seven starters.

Dominguez, 33, began his streak of meet titles a little more than a year ago, taking Aqueduct’s 2008-09 Inner Track Meet (124 wins), followed by the 2009 Aqueduct Spring Meet (29), the 2009 Belmont Spring/Summer Meet (98), the 2009 Saratoga Meet (45), the 2009 Belmont Fall Championship Meet (39), the 2009 Aqueduct Fall Meet (38) and the 2009-2010 Aqueduct Inner Track Meet (109).

Nationally, through Sunday, Dominguez ranked first in wins with 122 and second in purses earned ($3.93 million) behind Rafael Bejarano ($4.49 million).
