AAEP "On Call" Program to Support Derby Week Telecasts

An equine veterinarian representing the American Association of Equine Practitioners' (AAEP) "On Call" program will assist NBC Sports and ESPN with horse-health information during the April 30 and May 1 live racing telecasts at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Equine surgeon Larry Bramlage, DVM, MS, will be on hand to provide timely health reports to the media regarding the athletes in the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby-day races.

As an additional resource to journalists, the AAEP's online "Media Guide to Equine Sport" provides a medical index, illustrations, a glossary of terms and other references regarding the care of the equine athlete. The guide is available at http://www.aaep.org/media_guide_to_equine_sport.htm.

Funded in part by the prestigious Oak Tree Racing Association, the "On Call" program serves all nationally televised equestrian events. More than 25 AAEP-member veterinarians in the United States and Canada share their veterinary expertise as "On Call" spokespersons. The program received the 2008 Special Eclipse Award for its contributions to Thoroughbred racing.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse.  Currently, the AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its 10,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
