NEW ORLEANS (Saturday, March 06, 2010) – Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra had an “exceptionally good gallop” Saturday morning at Fair Grounds, one week before her upcoming engagement in the $200,000 New Orleans Ladies March 13, according to Fair Grounds clocker Billy Pettingill.
“Today (Saturday) she was really on the muscle,” said Pettingill. “She was trying to run off, like she usually does on Saturdays. She was having a lot of fun out there. She was very happy – really full of herself – but she still went about her business. There was a lot of traffic out there but she remained focused. She had a very good morning.”
Regular exercise rider Dominic Terry was aboard once again for the filly’s gallop seven days in advance of her first start of the 2010 racing season. Rachel Alexandra is trained by Eclipse Award-winning conditioner Steve Asmussen.
Last year, Rachel Alexandra won the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks in her second start of 2009 on her way to eventual Horse of the Year honors. She is scheduled for a more serious work—a timed breeze—on Monday morning.
