PAN AMERICAN

Ian Wilkes (trainer, Bearpath, 1st) – “I thought ‘Nick’ (Brother Nick) was the only speed in the race, although I didn’t think it would be that slow. I told Freddie (Lenclud) to just let him (Bearpath) run his race regardless of the pace. He’s ridden him four times and won three, so he knows him. In fact, he was his (Lenclud’s) first winner when Bearpath broke his maiden. That was a turning point for him (Bearpath). After his previous race when I put blinkers on him for the only time, I had him gelded and took the blinkers off, and he advanced from there. We’ve found out this is what he wants to do - run a mile-and-a-half – and that’s what we’ll keep him doing. His next start will probably be the Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland (Apr. 23).”

Federic Lenclud (jockey, Bearpath, 1st) – “This is my big horse. The first time I rode him, he was tough. So they raced him short to try and get him to relax. He won going short even though he’s not a speed horse. When he went a mile and one-half he really did well. Ian (Wilkes) told me to ride my race today, let him settle. I tucked him in to keep him quiet and when we hit the straight he had a push-button take off. I really was able to win because I outpaced the others.”

Joe Bravo (jockey, Never On Sunday, 2nd) – “I had a good trip; no real complaints. He was only three-wide so that wasn’t really an excuse.”
