RISKAVERSE QUOTES
Chad Brown, winning trainer of Dayatthespa (No. 5): “It was a terrific ride by Javier, and the filly showed up. We have a patient ownership group here. Jerry and Ronny Frankel couldn’t be here today, or Peter Bradley, who bought this horse. Steve Laymon, one of the original partners, is still in it, and he’s here. When I told all of them she needed time, no one questioned me. They said, ‘Do whatever you want to do with her.’ That’s what it really takes to maintain a campaign, I think, from start to finish: patient owners and good horses.”
“She broke half a step slowly, maybe just a little bit rusty from not running. Javier, I thought, did a good job to use her that first quarter, at least get a spot. He just told me that [Assateague] was hell-bent on having the lead. So he just went to Plan B because Plan A for us was to go right to the lead, and he executed Plan B beautifully.”
Javier Castellano, winning jockey aboard Dayatthespa (No. 5): “The race set up perfectly for us. I know this filly really well. She can go to the lead or she can relax. I think the key to win this race was going into the first turn. We could have dictated the pace, but Shaun Bridgmohan [aboard Assateague] decided to dictate the pace. I got my horse to settle and we stayed close to [them]. I didn’t want to use her too much until we were ready. I give all of the credit to Chad Brown. I love the way he brought this filly into the race off the layoff. She was fit.”
