VELASQUEZ WINS FOUR ON MOTHER’S DAY

ELMONT, N.Y. – Cornelio Velasquez finds himself in a three-way tie atop the riding standings at Belmont Park after winning four races from six mounts on Mother’s Day.

Velasquez, who has won nine races since the meet started on April 30, swept the early Daily Double with Chick in Slacks ($8.00) and Temecula Creek ($6.90). After missing by just a head in the fifth race, he guided Money’s Sweet ($7.90) and Worthy Wager ($9.30) to victory in races six and seven. He finished fifth in race nine to complete the day. His mounts in races eight and 10 were scratched.

Velasquez was quick the share the credit for his big day.

“I had a lot of good chances to win today,” Velasquez said. “My agent [Roger Sutton] put me on horses who could win.”

Velasquez shares the lead in the rider standings with Ramon Dominguez and Javier Castellano.
