FAIR GROUNDS WILL RETURN TO THANKSGIVING OPENER
LSRC Approves 84-Day Thoroughbred Meet, 12 Quarter Horse Days
NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, May 6, 2010) – Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will open its 2010-2011 Thoroughbred Racing Season on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, a return to the traditional holiday opener following two years of early-to-mid-November debuts. The 84-day Thoroughbred meeting will run through March 27, 2011, with five live racing days per week, Thursdays to Mondays (except holiday weeks), until the final month of the season, when racing will be conducted Fridays to Mondays.
A Wednesday program will be offered Dec. 22 before a holiday break with dark days on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25). The traditional Mardi Gras Day program marks the only Tuesday card of the season on March 8, 2011.
Fair Grounds also will offer a 10-day 2010 Quarter Horse Racing Season over two weeks this summer, Sept. 14-18 and 21-25. Two additional days of Quarter Horse racing on Nov. 19-20 have been reserved for the Bank of America Challenge Championships, the year-end Grade I stakes extravaganza that is the Quarter Horse world’s equivalent of Thoroughbred racing’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
The Fair Grounds racing calendar was approved by the Louisiana State Racing Commission at its most recent quarterly meeting on April 26.
