PRINCEVILLE CONDO PREPS FOR ARLINGTON’S ILLINOIS OWNERS STAKES

 

            Princeville Condo, formerly known as a budding grass artist, may yet regain his status as a lord of the lawn with a promising performance in Arlington’s upcoming $100,000 Illinois Owners Stakes over Arlington’s world famous turf course May 15.

 

            Trainer Michele Boyce thought so highly of Princeville Condo’s grass potential last winter that she sent the 5-year-old Illinois-bred gelding to New Orleans with an eye on Fair Grounds’ three-graded stakes grass series.  Unfortunately, there were some setbacks.

 

            Things started off well enough, with Princeville Condo, owned by Barr Three LLC and Cherrywood Racing Stable II, winning Fair Grounds’ $60,000 Buddy Diliberto Memorial Handicap Dec. 26 while under the temporary care of friend and fellow trainer Greg Geier.  However, in the Grade III Col. E. R. Bradley, first leg of the Crescent City turf troika on Jan. 23, Princeville Condo finished an indifferent fifth.

 

            “After that race, we discovered he had an entrapped epiglottis,” said Boyce, who had wintered in Chicago but flew down to New Orleans to witness the fifth-place finish in the Col. Bradley.  “We were not aware of that until after the race, but I knew he was a better horse than he showed that day.

 

            “Surgery was performed to correct the throat problem,” said Boyce.  “I can’t say it was serious surgery, but serious enough to require a general anesthetic.  Normally, once sufficient drainage is complete and the danger of infection has passed, a horse can resume training in about a month, but then he suffered a bruised foot and we had to back off on him again for awhile.

 

            Once back in training after being shipped back to Chicago, Princeville Condo breezed a half in 49.80 at Hawthorne March 10, another half in 49 flat April 1, five-eighths at the Southside oval in 1:03.80 April 18, and then three-quarters at Arlington in 1:13 on May 2.

 

            Princeville Condo is scheduled for a final half-mile blow out Sunday, with jockey James Graham in the irons.  Graham will also be aboard for the Illinois Owners.

            “We may be at somewhat of a disadvantage in the Illinois Owners because of the long layoff and the caliber of the horses he will be facing,” Boyce said, speaking during training hours Saturday morning, “but we’ve got to start somewhere, so as long as he runs well, we’ll continue to look forward to a promising summer campaign at Arlington.”

 

            In addition to being the regular trainer of Princeville Condo, Boyce is part owner along with breeder Jack Barr as well as Nate Ruffolo.

 

            “I’ve trained for Jack Barr for eight or nine years now,” Boyce said.  “He lives in Missouri but he sends his mares to Illinois to foal in order to take advantage of the Illinois program.  This horse’s dam is a good producer.  I’ve trained three offspring out of that mare (Perfectlywonderful) that went on to win races for me.

 

            “Jack named this horse after a condo he stayed at when he was vacationing in Hawaii,” Boyce concluded.  “He said it was one of the best vacations he ever had and also one of the happiest times of his life.”

 

           

 

 

ILLINOIS OWNERS STAKES FOR FILLIES AND MARES ALSO RUN MAY 15

 

            The $100,000 Illinois Owners Stakes for Illinois-owned fillies and mares will also be run on May 15.

 

            Both divisions of the Illinois Owners Stakes are restricted to horses where at least 51 per cent of the horses’ recorded ownership is registered to an owner whose Illinois Racing Board license registration reflects an address in the State of Illinois.

 

            The male division will have its fifth running next Saturday, while the female division will be observing its fourth renewal.
