PIMLICO ANNOUNCES 2010 ALIBI BREAKFAST AWARD WINNERS
BALTIMORE, 04-21-10—Pimlico Race Course today announced the winners of this year’s Preakness media awards. Honorees will be recognized and awards presented at the May 13 Alibi Breakfast in the Terrace Dining Room at Pimlico Race Course. The ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. two days prior to the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (Grade I).
For the second consecutive year USA Today’s Tom Pedulla is the recipient of the David F. Woods Award, this time for an inspirational feature on Calvin Borel before the jockey rode Rachel Alexandra to victory in the 2009 Preakness. The Woods Award honors the best story for the previous year. Judging was done by Preakness notes team members Ed Gray, Mike Kane and Matt Graves, all award winning turf writers.
Eclipse Sportswire photographer Scott Serio is the winner of the Jerry Frutkoff Preakness Photo Award, sponsored by Nikon. Serio captured the spontaneous emotion of Borel and assistant trainer Scott Blasi after Rachel Alexandra’s historical score in last year’s Preakness. Judging was completed by Nikon’s Mark Kettenhofen, Maryland Jockey Club photographer Jim McCue and the award-winning Molly Riley of Reuters.
The prestigious Old Hilltop Award will be bestowed upon NBC Sports anchor Tom Hammond, who has hosted the network’s Preakness coverage since 2001, and WBAL Radio reporter Scott Wykoff, for covering Thoroughbred racing with excellence and distinction.
Since 1996, the United States Postal Service has opened a temporary Preakness station the week of the Preakness. The Honorary Postmaster for Preakness 135 Station is Maryland Horsemen’s Assistance Fund benefits coordinator Bobby Lillis.
Baltimore radio personalities Scott Garceau and Keith Mills, former broadcast partners at WMAR-TV from 1987-2006, will host the event for the second straight year.
